Leaking Taps: questions and answers
It depends on the tap and which part has failed: a kitchen mixer, a cartridge, a basin tap, a garden tap or a full replacement. We show you the worn part and give you the price in writing before we start. Quotes are free.
Sydney Water says changing a tap washer is minor work a homeowner may legally do. If the tap drips again afterwards, the seat is usually worn, and that is when it is worth getting us in.
The brass seat has been cut by the drip, so the new washer has no flat surface to seal against. We re-cut the seat, then fit the washer.
Yes. Mixers use a ceramic cartridge instead of a washer, and we match it to the brand on the tap. If the cartridge is no longer made, we say so and price a new mixer.
While the body is sound and parts are available, a repair is usually the better spend. If the chrome is flaking, the body is cracked or the spindle thread has stripped, tapware replacement is the better choice, and we will tell you which applies.
Not as the owner of the pipe. Sydney Water owns the main in the street and the water meter, but the pipes and taps on your side of the meter belong to the property owner, so a dripping tap is yours to have fixed by your own licensed plumber.
A drip is not, but a tap that will not turn off at all is. If you cannot stop it at the isolation valve or the meter, ring us: a plumber answers the phone 24/7, not a call centre, and after-hours attendance is quoted on the phone before anyone leaves.
