Backflow Prevention: questions and answers
It is a valve assembly, usually near the water meter, that lets water into the property but stops it travelling back into the main. Different types suit different hazard levels, from the check valve built into a household meter to a reduced pressure zone device on a high hazard site.
High and medium hazard devices must be tested when installed and every year after by an accredited backflow plumber. Sydney Water keeps a register and reminds owners when the test is due.
It depends on the number of devices, their type and size, where they are and whether they pass. The price is in writing before the test, and lodging the results is part of the job.

Most do not need a separate one, because standard 20 mm and 25 mm Sydney Water meters have a backflow device built in for low hazard homes. A below-ground rainwater tank, tank water used inside, or a larger meter can change that.
No. Testing medium and high hazard devices is limited to licensed plumbers with backflow accreditation, and the owner exemption for small repairs specifically excludes backflow devices.

Sydney Water can test the device itself and charge for it, restrict or disconnect the water supply, or recover its costs. Booking the test is far less trouble.
