Most blocked drains in Sydney homes are a mix of roots, wipes and fat sitting well past the reach of a plunger. We open the nearest access point, cut the blockage out with the electric drain machine or the jet blaster, flush the line and run water to prove it. If it has blocked before, the camera goes down to show you why. You see the price in writing first.
A plunger works on the trap and the first stretch of pipe. A bottle of drain cleaner works on the top layer of whatever it lands on. Most house drain blockages form metres away, at a joint where a root has come in or a dip where the pipe has settled, built up in layers of paper, wipes, fat and hair. The NSW Poisons Information Centre lists drain cleaners among the household products that can poison you by breathing, touching or swallowing. The jet blaster and the drain machine go to where the blockage actually is and take it off the pipe wall.
A Federation terrace in the Inner West or the Eastern Suburbs usually sits on clay pipe, often shared with the neighbours, and roots love those joints. Post-war brick homes across St George, Canterbury-Bankstown and Ryde often have clay or early cast iron. Newer homes on slab in the west tend to have PVC, which blocks less often but still takes fat and wipes. On the North Shore and in the Hills, big canopy means roots. Tell us the rough age of the house and what grows in the yard, and we bring the right head for the pipe.
Make sure we can get to the work area, and move anything fragile out of the way.
Let us know if there are pets at the property, and keep them away from the work area.
Tell us about parking, gate codes or building access when you book.
Note when the problem started and what you have seen. It helps us find the cause.
It depends on access, what is in the pipe and how long the line is, so an honest figure comes after we have looked. There is a $0 call-out on any job you book, and you get the price in writing before anyone starts.
Same day on most jobs, seven days a week. A plumber answers the phone 24/7, not a call centre, and after-hours attendance is quoted on the phone before anyone leaves. Tell us if it is your only toilet.
Either a partly blocked drain is holding waste that rots between uses, or a trap in a rarely used floor waste has dried out and lets sewer air in. Pour a bucket of water into that floor waste first. If the smell is back in a day or two, ring us.
If the kitchen sink is also slow or gurgles when the dishwasher pumps out, the shared waste pipe is narrowing with fat. If the sink runs fine, look at the dishwasher's own filter first. We clear the kitchen line and flush the dishwasher connection on the same visit.
Neighbours affected, overflow beyond your boundary, or spilling while nobody runs water points to Sydney Water's pipes, and their faults line is the first call. Only your place, only when you run water, points to your private drain.
Yes. The drain machine cuts them back to the pipe wall and the jet blaster flushes the pieces through. Cutting doesn't close the gap they came in through, so they regrow. A patch or liner over that joint is what stops them.
Very rarely for a blockage. Almost every one clears from an inspection opening, the gully or a fixture. Digging only comes up if the camera finds a collapsed pipe, and even then relining often avoids it.
Call us now, or send the form and we will come back to you.
