Often, yes. A reseal, a shower head or mixer repair and many waste leaks are done with the wall tiles left in place. Only a failed membrane means stripping the shower back.

A damp wall or bubbling paint behind the shower, a floor outside it that only wets on shower days (the waste), or a drip after the water is off (the shower head or mixer). A musty smell in the next room is often the first sign.

Stop using that shower, keep people away from any wet light fitting, and photograph the ceiling. Then ring us. We test whether the seal, the waste, the wall behind or the membrane is the path, so the right thing is fixed before the ceiling is repaired.

It depends on the condition of the membrane underneath, how the shower is cleaned and how well the room is ventilated. A reseal over a sound membrane lasts; one over a failed membrane does not, which is why we test first.
