Overflow Relief Gully in Sydney
Overflow relief gully problems in Sydney: the round grate by the outside tap that nobody thinks about is bubbling sewage onto the path.
Tell us what's happening

The short answer
An overflowing relief gully means the drain beyond it is blocked. Champion Plumbing & Drains clears the drain and, where the gully sits too low, raises it, across Sydney.
How it works
Step 1: Call or book online
Tell us what is happening. We ask the right questions and book a time that suits you.
Step 2: We find the cause
A licensed plumber diagnoses it properly, with a drain camera, leak detection or a pressure test where it helps.
Step 3: A fixed price, agreed first
You agree the price before any work starts. We quote the job, not the hour, so there are no surprise charges.
Step 4: Done right, guaranteed
We finish the job, clean up, and back our workmanship with a lifetime labour guarantee.
Step 5: You know the price first
The figure for the whole job, in writing, before anyone starts. That figure is what turns up on the invoice.

Questions and answers
You can clear leaves and soil off the grate by hand, but a gully that is overflowing is telling you the drain beyond it is blocked, and clearing that drain is licensed drainage work. Stop using water inside and ring us.
We'd leave it. Plunging a gully pushes against a blocked main line, and when it works it tends to shift the blockage further down rather than out. The drain machine or jet blaster clears it properly from the right direction.
Usually a dry water seal in the gully trap. Run the outside tap into it for a little while. If the smell keeps coming back, the trap or the riser may be cracked.
No. The grate needs to stay visible and loose so it can lift. In a paved area the standard allows a lower riser, but only where the paving is finished so water can't pond around it.
Either it sits too low and rainwater runs into it, or stormwater has been plumbed into it. Both put rainwater into the sewer, which isn't allowed. We can raise it or redirect the stormwater.
Yes. Raising, moving or replacing a gully is drainage work, and in NSW the plumber completes a Certificate of Compliance at the end of all plumbing and drainage work.
