In more detail
A call-out fee pays for a plumber to get to you and look at the problem. It's separate from the price of the work itself.
Champion charges a $0 call-out on any job you book, and the price for the work is in writing before it starts.
Work outside normal hours is handled differently: the attendance is quoted on the phone before anyone leaves.
Before you book any plumber, ask what the fee covers, whether it comes off the job, and when you'll see the price in writing.
What a call-out fee is
Getting a plumber to your door costs the business something before a single tool comes out: a stocked truck on the road, fuel, tolls, parking and a licensed tradesperson's time. Many plumbers recover that with a call-out fee, charged for turning up and looking. Some bundle a first stretch of labour into it. Some credit it against the job if you go ahead. Some charge it regardless. None of those is wrong in itself, but they're very different deals, and you should know which one you're getting before the truck arrives.
Call-out, attendance and labour are three different things
The call-out is getting there and diagnosing. Attendance is the word most plumbers use for coming out at an unusual hour, like the middle of the night or a public holiday, when someone is rostered on to answer. Labour and parts are the job itself: clearing the drain, replacing the valve, running the pipe. A fair invoice makes it clear which is which. A confusing one blends them into an hourly figure nobody can check against what was done.
When an ad says the call-out costs nothing
A cheap call-out, or none at all, can be a genuine saving. It can also be made back somewhere else: a high minimum labour charge, a vague hourly rate with no estimate, or a price that only appears on the invoice once the job is done. The test is simple. Will the plumber write down the price for the work before starting, and does that number hold? If it does, a low call-out is a real saving. If it doesn't, the call-out was never the part that mattered.
How Champion handles it
There's a $0 call-out on any job you book. That holds in every suburb we cover, from the Northern Beaches and the Hills District to Sutherland Shire, Camden and Wollondilly. Coming out and having a look is free on a booked job, so the plumber can lift the pit lid, test the pressure or run the camera down the line before anyone talks money. Then you get the price in writing, and you decide before work starts. If something hidden turns up once the job is underway, we stop, show you and price it before touching it. Our free quotes are exactly that: a written number, not an estimate that grows.
Nights, weekends and public holidays
Work that can't wait for normal hours is handled differently, and we're upfront about that. After-hours attendance is quoted on the phone before anyone leaves, so you hear the number while you can still decide whether the job needs someone now or can hold until morning. Often it can hold, and we'll say so. The repair itself is still priced in writing at the door before any work begins.
What a written price should show
The job described in plain words, so you can check it against what you asked for. What's included, like parts, testing and taking the old fitting away. What isn't included, like making good plaster or tiles. How anything unexpected will be handled. And the paperwork you'll get, because in NSW the plumber must complete a Certificate of Compliance at the end of all plumbing and drainage work, including minor work.
Renters and strata owners
If you rent, the landlord or agent normally arranges and pays for repairs, so tell them first. For urgent repairs, like a burst water service, a blocked or broken toilet or a failed hot water service, NSW tenancy law lets a tenant who can't reach the landlord or agent use a licensed tradesperson and be reimbursed up to a set limit. Keep the invoice and the written details. In strata, an owner who pays for an emergency repair may be refunded by the owners corporation if the cause was something it's responsible for, such as plumbing in a boundary wall.
