The shower went cold halfway through this morning.
In more detail
The unit is only part of the price. Fitting, compliance valves, removal of the old tank and any gas or electrical work make up the rest.
A like-for-like swap in the same spot costs least to install. Changing fuel or position adds work.
A replacement heater in NSW needs a temperature control device unless it's a factory pre-set unit, so a quote without one isn't comparing like with like.
Switching to a heat pump or solar can bring an NSW Energy Savings Scheme discount, taken off the quote upfront if the upgrade is eligible.
Check it isn't just a valve or an element before paying for a new tank.
What you're actually paying for
A hot water replacement price has two halves. One is the unit itself, and that varies with type, size and make. The other is everything that turns a box on a trolley into hot water at your taps: draining and removing the old tank, setting the new one level, connecting water and gas or power, fitting the valves the code requires, running a compliant relief drain, commissioning it and leaving you the paperwork. When one quote looks much lower than another, it's almost always the second half that's thinner.
Like for like versus changing type
The least installation work is a like-for-like swap: same fuel, same position, reusing connections that are still compliant. The moment you change type, the job grows. Electric to heat pump means a suitable outdoor spot, a base and sometimes electrical work. A gas tank to continuous flow often means a larger gas pipe from the meter. Moving an indoor gas heater outside, which NSW Fair Trading advises for new and replacement gas water heaters, means new pipework. None of these are bad ideas, but they belong in the price from the start.
A plumber answers 24/7. We put a fixed price in writing before we start.
Upfront price versus running cost
A heat pump usually costs more to buy and fit than an electric tank, but a heat pump can cut hot water running costs. Under the NSW Energy Savings Scheme, eligible heat pump and solar upgrades can attract a discount that is given upfront in the installer's quote. So the fair comparison isn't just the two quotes side by side. It's each quote plus what the system will cost to run while you own the house.
How we price a replacement
We give free quotes, and there's a $0 call-out on any job you book. The plumber checks the old unit, the position, the gas or power and the water pressure, then writes the price down before any work starts. If something hidden turns up once we start, we stop, show you and price it before touching it. Common Rinnai, Rheem and Dux units are carried for same-day swaps, and there's a lifetime guarantee on our labour, for as long as you own the place.
What changes the price
Electric storage, gas storage, heat pumps, continuous flow and solar are different machines with different price tags, and some need far more installation work than others.
A tank or instant unit sized for a family of five costs more than one for a couple, and the right size comes from how many showers run at once.
Reusing the old position and its connections is the least labour. A new fuel, a new wall or a new concrete base is more.
A tank on an open ground-floor wall is quick. Roof spaces, narrow side passages, stairs and balcony cupboards all take longer, on the way out and on the way in.
A temperature control device when the heater is replaced, a pressure limiting valve if the incoming pressure calls for one, and a relief drain that falls properly to a safe spot.
A continuous-flow unit may need a bigger gas pipe. A heat pump or a change of tariff may need electrical work.
Daytime work is priced as normal. After-hours attendance is quoted on the phone before anyone leaves.
Get your price in writing. We price the job, not the hour, and there's a $0 call-out on any job you book.
